For those who missed its local debut at the RiverRun International Film Festival a couple of years ago, Homeless, a film shot at Samaritan, is being shown at Aperture on August 23 at 7:30 p.m. The film is part of Aperture’s Made in the Triad series. Filmmakers Clay and Tif Hassler based their film on a true story of a homeless teenager they met in Winston-Salem. The film was shot at Samaritan’s old building during the summer of 2012. The film has been praised for its realism, sensitivity and ability to take you into the world of poverty and homelessness. A discussion led by Samaritan’s Executive Director, Sonjia Kurosky, will follow the film. You can read more and buy tickets here.
Thanks to our 46 sponsors and 130 cyclists for helping us shoot past our goal for the third annual Tour de Llama.
We had a great day on June 25 at Divine Llama Vineyards in East Bend. Thanks to Grill Team Six for providing the excellent food. Thanks to Matt Canter and Ken’s Bike Shop for planning the route and taking care of all the details. And thanks to board member Michael West, the owner of Divine Llama.

Elisa Sturkie, a senior at Mt. Tabor High School and aspiring filmmaker, approached Samaritan last year with the idea of doing her Girl Scout Gold Award at Samaritan. The Gold Award is the equivalent of the Eagle Scout project. Sturkie’s scout troop had talked about ways to make their projects meaningful to the community.
“I started thinking about what segment of the population I thought was the most underserved,” she said.
Sturkie, a member of Girl Scout Troop 41411, and Samaritan staff came up with the idea of doing a virtual tour of the building for Samaritan’s website.
Sturkie, who plans to study communications at Tufts University in Boston this fall, said that seeing the project come together was rewarding. You can take the tour here toward the bottom of the page.
