As part of their community service efforts through Davidson-Davie Community College, both Caleigh and Maddison gravitated towards Samaritan Ministries in hopes of making a difference in the lives of our guests, one meal at a time.
Volunteering is one of the best hands-on experiences for students to learn the importance of giving back to their community. We are so thankful for our student Samaritans for their service and for bringing awareness to our mission in hopes to inspire future generations.
Salemtowne, celebrating 50 years as the gold standard of senior living, is sponsoring our Volunteer Program in 2022–23.
This program will recognize Samaritan Ministries volunteers throughout the year.
Last week, Samaritan Ministries participated in the Annual Point-in-Time Count in partnership with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Continuum of Care (COC).
Point-in-Time Count happens annually on the last Wednesday of January all over the country. The community comes together to survey our brothers, sisters, and families experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness. The information helps capture data on the number of people who are homeless along with challenges they are facing. We also give individuals an opportunity to share their suggestions for the City and County to improve services. The Point-in-Time Count is a required activity for the Continuum of Care (CoC) to receive federal homelessness funding assistance from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
This year, Samaritan staff and the men of Project Cornerstone stepped into the community to help survey individuals. Staff also completed special surveys with all shelter guests and on Thursday interviewed Soup Kitchen guests who had slept outside the night before. The information collected is used to help provide a more accurate reflection of homelessness in Forsyth County and to help our community plan for services to help our neighbors in need.

Meet Allan D.
At the tender age of 17, Allan D. began using drugs to cope with his hostile home environment. His parents were angry all the time and he feared for his life. For decades he struggled to balance work, anxiety, depression and addiction. It wasn’t until the age of 34 that he began seeking treatment, and he tried recovery programs all over the south.
He became homeless in 2009 after both of his parents passed away. In shelters, he struggled with anger management and suicidal thoughts. While hanging out at the day center at Bethesda Center, he met David L. in 2017. David invited him to try Project Cornerstone. They both attended daily AA/NA meetings for several months before joining the program.
Cornerstone was different than other programs. It was personalized to identify his triggers and connect him to professionals to address his trauma. There was no pressure to figure out how to pay for the program or a 28-day time limit. He learned to make friends and to get along with others. He learned about forgiveness, grace and struggles.
Even after completing the program, Allan moved to his own place but struggled with relapse. David L, other Cornerstone guests, and Samaritan staff were there to pick up the pieces with Allan. “Aftercare saved my life, “he shares. “It was here all along waiting for me. When I was ready to come back, Cornerstone was ready to help me again.”
Allan’s road to recovery has not been easy, but he remains determined more than ever to maintain his sobriety. He exercises regularly, talks with a mental health counselor, and attends Cornerstone classes to stay connected. He is one of the many miracles that allowed time and Samaritan to be a part of his personal healing and transformation to living a healthier and self-sufficient life.

Samaritan Ministries in Winston-Salem is seeking a full-time development director to plan and execute annual fundraising strategies. Activities include cultivating donor relationships, executing three signature fundraising events annually, researching/writing grant requests and managing the volunteer and marketing programs. Bachelor’s degree with minimum five years of non-profit fundraising experience as well as proficiency with MS Office and database management. Ideal candidate with have strong organizational skills and ability to work independently, excellent interpersonal skills to build relationships and superior written and oral communication.
